More than 60 years promoting the industry in Guatemala.

The history of the industry is one of the key pieces for future citizens to see a country full of opportunities and to be multipliers of the example of the pioneers in this field. Let's go back to the pages of the past that have left a legacy in our beautiful land of the quetzal, our national bird.

To counteract the economic crisis, in 1932 President Jorge Ubico formed the Committee for the Promotion of Industry. Two years later, the AIG and the CCG merged, and the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIG) emerged, which participated in Ubico’s national fairs, encouraging industrialists to exhibit their products. When the “ubiquista” dictatorship fell in 1944, the middle classes were favored with better job opportunities and salary. The industry was able to expand and in 1948, the General Association of Industrialists of Guatemala (AGIG) was founded. However, the negative experiences lived by some industrialists and by the agricultural sector during the revolutionary governments in 1945 to 1954, encouraged the business sector to organize itself in associations and chambers to defend their interests. This is how the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial Associations (CACIF), the Association of Sugar Producers of Guatemala (Asazgua) and the National Coffee Association (Anacafé) were born.

The first important industry that was established in Guatemala was Fábrica de hilados y tejidos Cantel, in 1880. Then came Cervecería Centroamericana, in 1886; Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, in 1894 and Cementos Novella factory, in 1897. Many other small and medium-sized industries simultaneously emerged and together contributed to the development of the economy and the comfort of users and consumers. In 1920, after the fall of the dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, the government of Carlos Herrera established the Ministry of Agriculture and the General Association of Farmers (AGA), and the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce (CCG) emerged. In 1929, a group of industrialists founded the Association of Industrialists of Guatemala (AIG), which remained until 1931 due to the world depression that followed the fall of the New York Stock Exchange in 1929.

“CIG has promoted the creation of important institutions in Guatemala”

CIG has also supported the constitution of industrial sectors. To conduct its activities, the Chamber also created advertising, public relations and propaganda committees, it publishes the Industry and Business Magazine, and organizes national fairs together with the Permanent Committee of Guatemalan Exhibitions (Coperex).

In its first years of existence, it was important to ensure the training of industry workers, which began in 1959 with the founding of the Industrial Vocational Institute Imrich Fischmann.  In 1960, the Center for the Promotion of Industrial Productivity (CFPI) was opened, of which the first elected president of CIG, Luis Schlesinger Carrera, was director. In 1964 the CFPI changed its name to the Center for Development and Industrial Productivity (CDPI) and, in 1969, to the National Center for Development, Training and Productivity (Cendap). Finally, in 1972, it was replaced by the Technical Institute for Training and Productivity (Intecap).

CIG was also the promoter of the creation of the Workers’ Recreation Institute (Irtra), a project that became a reality as of 1960. Likewise, the Chamber promoted the creation of Banco Industrial, in 1968, as a credit institution for the industrial sector. It is in this bank where the trust for the construction of the CIG headquarters building was created, so in 1969 the site was bought and in 1970 construction began, which culminated in February 1973. During its 50 years of existence, CIG has undergone several restructurings for reorganizations, the first being the one organized in 1984, which gave rise to the creation of the Directorates for Politics and Representations, Research and Analysis, Marketing and Communications, Finance and Administration, and Exports. From the latter emerged, in 1997, the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport).
